How to Read a Chest Protector's Certification Label (So You're Not Guessing)
A CE mark on a chest protector tells you almost nothing on its own. The useful information — what the product is actually certified to do, and how well — is in the fine print most people skip past. Here's how to actually read one.
Start With the Standard Number, Not the CE Mark
The CE mark itself just means a product has been assessed against some EU standard — it doesn't tell you which one, or what it covers. For chest and back protection specifically, you're looking for one of these:
- EN 1621-3 — impact protection for chest protectors specifically (what most riders actually need for crash protection up front)
- EN 1621-2 — impact protection for back protectors specifically (a combo chest/back product should carry both certifications, one per panel)
- EN 14021 — debris/stone-shield protection for motocross gear (not the same thing as impact protection — see below)
If a label or product page only shows a CE logo with no standard number attached, that's incomplete information. Legitimate certified gear will list the specific standard.

Check the Performance Level
For products certified under EN 1621-3 or EN 1621-2, there's a second detail to check: the performance level, either 1 or 2. This isn't a quality tier invented by the brand — it's tied to a specific, measurable force-transmission threshold from the drop-test standard itself. Level 2 represents a more rigorous bar than Level 1.
A label reading "EN 1621-3 Level 2" is telling you two separate things: which test the product passed, and how well it performed on that test. A label that just says "CE" or "EN 1621-3" without a level number is missing the second, arguably more useful, piece of information.
Understand What "Impact Protection" vs. "Debris Protection" Means
This is where labels get genuinely confusing, because both categories can carry a CE mark:
- EN 1621-3 tests how much force transmits through the protector to the body during a direct impact — this is what you want for actual crash protection.
- EN 14021 tests resistance to puncture and deflection from flying debris (rocks, dirt, roost) — this is a different kind of protection entirely, and it says nothing about impact-force performance.
A product labeled only under EN 14021 may be a perfectly good roost/debris shield, but it isn't a substitute for EN 1621-3 impact protection if a direct crash impact is what you're trying to guard against.
Look for a Zone or Coverage Designation
Some certification documentation specifies exactly which body zones a protector was tested to cover — for example, sternum and anterior ribs versus a combined chest-and-back configuration. This matters because a product can be certified for one zone but marketed in a way that implies broader coverage than what was actually tested. If you're not sure what a specific product's certification covers, the manufacturer's test certificate (not just the marketing page) will spell it out.
A Quick Reading Checklist
When you're looking at a chest protector's label or spec sheet, check for:
- Standard number — EN 1621-3 (impact) vs. EN 14021 (debris), not just a CE logo
- Performance level — 1 or 2, if EN 1621-2 or -3 applies
- Coverage zone — what body area was actually tested, not just implied by product photos (CB = Central Back)
- Issuing body — a legitimate certification will reference a notified body or testing lab, which you can typically verify if you ask the manufacturer
What to Do If a Label Doesn't Have This Information
If a product's listing or physical label doesn't show a specific standard and level, don't assume the best case. Ask the brand directly for the certification documentation before buying — a legitimate manufacturer will have it readily available. If they can't produce it, that's a meaningful signal about what you're actually buying.
The Bottom Line
A CE mark by itself is the beginning of the information, not the end of it. The standard number tells you what was tested, the level tells you how well it performed, and the coverage zone tells you where that protection actually applies. Reading past the logo to those three details is the difference between knowing what you're buying and just hoping it's enough.
